Default NY New York title change after rv conversion?

Hello everyone!
I am new to this forum, but I like what I see so far! Lots of good advice and friendly people!

I have run into a bit of a road block though here in New York.
I am looking at buying a used Sprinter and converting it into an RV. Nothing extreeme, just the basics. But I can't seem to find any info on the NY DMV sites to change the title classification from a commercial truck (read EXPENSIVE insurance) to an RV motor home title.
IE if they will even do it, what equipment it needs to have to be considered an RV, etc.
It also GREATLY affects the registration fees.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated!

First let me extend you a hale and hearty welcome to the forum.

From what I've read on various forums New York is actually fairly easy for camper registration compared to other states such as California.

This may help you some.

Edit:
When I registered my Sprinter it didn't have a back seat, but I knew I was going to add one soon. I did what many good Americans would do in that situation. I lied, said it had a back seat and installed one very soon after registering. If you do it any other way the bureaucrats will de-rail you somehow.

Another edit:
I was thinking, always dangerous. NYS says "at least one seat or set of seat fittings that is installed behind the driver, or". My rear seat(s) mount to my L-track so that means that my L-track seat fittings are always in place. The way the law reads to me is that the seat doesn't necessarily always need to be in place, just the seat "fittings".

I used angle iron on some Dodge seats. I'm certain it would would work with other brand seats too.

FWIW.

Good luck. vic

I bought my 02 in 04 in NC and brought it back to MA. It had had commercial registration and a partial rv conversion: sink, propane cooktop, bed, installed rear seat, no windows or fan.

The MA Registry folks debated for half an hour what to call it. (The Freightliner badge confused them further.) We settled on a passenger vehicle registration vs a camper.

The difference here was $10/year in insurance costs.

In my case, I live in the People's Republic of Cambridge and looking like a car gave me the best deal with the local parking sticker commissars.

I do get to always decide whether I'm a car or a truck on the road but I suspect most Sprinter owners do the same.

In NY, with commercial plates, you will need to carry a log book, stop at ALL truck scales, cant even carry alcohol(not even a sealed 6pack/case), and must stop driving after a certain amount of hrs on the road. I have a 2010 3500 cargo, rated for 11,000lbs. I live in NY, bought the sprinter new, in Texas. The MB dealer in Texas, was able to get my commercial reg changed to a passenger reg for me. There is no reg for a RV. The reg was changed from commercial to passenger. It did take a few phone calls from Texas to the NYMVD, but it was simple(I had the new reg, before I even did the conversion) NY DMV does not check to see if you lied on your app.......just don't get pulled over (your insurance co, will probably want to take pictures) ............. heres what Sportsmobile says you need for a class B http://www.sportsmobile.com/5_general-info.html (scroll down to Miscellaneous Info) good luck
