Well I can give you a bit of info here. I picked up the van on saturday and put it into service on monday. Only have a touch over 900 miles so far, but my mileage with the 4.1 rear end (at that is what the sticker says) is at 22.4 over said miles according to the mpg computer. By the way the mpg computer seems very accurate according to hand calculation on the 1st fillup.

Plumber
Although we are miles apart
My five tonne Hi top does 22 MPG up in the Northern territory. It carries only two ton but the boys sleep in it at night as well too cold in the Deserts at night, My lady does not exceed 65MPh , on dirt roads, I don't know what the rpm is between ranges, I'll have to send them a satellite/ message, to find out! Thats if they haven't gone walkabout again, they like crawling under rocks

2350 RPM ~= 65.7 miles per hour with Service Manual-described transmission gearing etc using 3.92 axle value

What do you need to know about RPM?

Well I have been looking across the USA for a sprinter with my options. One of them being the 3.92 to help fuel economy. The whole reason for justifing a 40K van vs. the 21-28K ones I have now. It is just hard to find only about 45 of them here in the states in the 170 or 170 EXT models. If a 4.10 is better it makes my vehicle searching process a whole lot easier. So I wanted to know wether the 3.92 just revs lower or same as 4.10. Now that I know it revs 300 rpms lower ( thanks for your reply) than the 4.10 does it really get that much more MPG. Also I am curious as to what rpm the CRD likes most for cruising. For example with all my plumbing tools & materials; about 750-1050 lbs ( includes weatherguard upfit storage bins as it will drive everyday) , plus a fully loaded truck with toilets,water heaters and fixtures approx 250-700 more pounds for local jobs once a week . Will this be fine for the 3.92, I am thinking so from what I have heard and read 2nd hand. I will also be towing a trailer a few times per year about 900-2200 lbs. So will the 3.92 always get better milage or just when it has a light load. Appreciate the info..... Dave

PS. 300 rpm difference on my pickup equivlates to about 2.0 MPG more at highway speeds of 75-80 mph. Gas motor. empty load

I have a 4.10, and was getting 17-18, mpg, NEW, then hit 3,500 miles and got 22-24 mpg, hand calculated.

Excellent pics Jon......... what does a tonne weight? I assume you mean metric ton. What is a 5 tonne equal to here? 3500? Thanks

Sounds good for dirt rods too. Kendall that sounds excellent, what kind of cargo weight and what version sprinter........Thanks

I think Tom gets the credit for the pictures :)

A metric ton (tonne) is 2,204.622 lbs.

I think that the 5 tonne rig maps to a 3500 (~11,000 lbs gross vehicle weight rating), but others - I'm sure - will speak with some authority on the matter.

Sprinter Class
2500= 2.5 Ton =5000 Lbs..Sprinters Metric tonne=5500 lbs rounded up
3500=3.5 Ton=7000 Lbs.................Metric Tonne=7700 Lbs
The above are the legal definition of the US sprinters under the designated class they are under Class C
Class B 4200 series
4200= 4.2 Ton =8400Lbs..Sprinters Metric Tonne=9324Lbs
4900= 4.9 Ton =9800Lbs...............Metric Tonne=10878lbs
6900= 6.9 Ton =13800Lbs.............Metric Tonne=15180 Lbs In the US a metric ton is shortened to 2200LBS, Jon's figures for the true metric tonne are correct.[Higher again]

The series 5500 is for special orders Freezer vans or tractor trailer CAB+CHASSIS
after 6.9 t =7000 series AGAIN CUSTOM ORDERS FOR HEAVY DUTY HAULAGE.
ANY SPRINTER AFTER 4.2 IS CLASS B special licenses required medium heavy duty
6.9 Ton requires heavy rigid licenses
3.9 axle ratio will give a higher fuel economy rating, the 4.1 ratio belongs on a manual with a four cylinder engine, as the power out put is similar that is for torque , the difference would not be that great but one would get a lesser high end speed, with slightly more Torque at the lower RPM range for pulling a load, Go to 4.3 on an auto and it will bog down no top end speed fuel economy will suffer, but it will haul and have Superior traction at low speed from a standing start. looses it grunt after mid torque rpm It's a work bus not for pleasure.
Figures quoted were rounded up not 100% but close enough
Now this is what a 6.9 unit will haul
