416 Sprintshift clutch slip in reverse

I have a motorhome, built on a 2006/7 Sprinter 416 chassis - with Sprintshift automatic 6 speed gearbox.

Just recently, I have started having problems of 'clutch' slip when reversing - mainly on grass or uneven ground. The engine revs without much vehicle movement, and a nasty smell emanates from the engine area.

I took it to a local truck garage who says they cannot find a problem (their yard is flat concrete), but say maybe the clutch needs completely replacing (£2000-3000 they estimate!)

Could there be any other cause, especially a cheaper alternative anyone could suggest.

Thinking about the garage and their testing, the problems I have encountered have always been at the end of a run when maneuvering onto a camp pitch. So I have just been out and tried reversing with the handbrake on and left foot on the brake (not hard down). The vehicle moves without any perceptible clutch slip (or undue engine reving).

So it appears that the problem exists only after a run.

Many thanks

Peter
