2012 Service indicator reset procedure

Hi Guys,
I am new here and this question has probably been asked a thousand times before. I work for a small RV dealer and we sometimes have a customer request we do an oil change. I have a 2012 3500 in the shop right now and the handbook says to get a Mercedes dealer to reset the service indicator! Our nearest dealer is 40 miles away! This vehicle does not have steering wheel controls. It has four buttons on the dash that I think may be used to reset the indicator? Can someone please advise if this is something we can do here?
Thank you.

A few of us - including your humble author - have never been able to get any procedure to work.

I'm surprised this is news to your dealership. Didn't your RV Sprinter Sales and Service Training cover this?

Hi Jon,

thanks for the information. I performed this procedure and the darn thing went and reset...yippee. As for having backup from Mercedes, this is an area that needs to be addressed. We sell Roadtrek SS and RS models and have people coming back to us for service. I would like to think we are a one stop shop for their product and service concerns, but we are not....we try but are somewhat lacking in certain areas. We also carry Winnebago ERA but I have not pursued them regarding service work on the chassis.
It saddens me that our client base part with about $100k and are then sent in numerous directions to have the vehicle serviced and repaired. I would dearly love to have the one stop professional service facility to accomodate our customers....including Onan generator service.
I am a Master Certified RV Technician and Onan RV generator certified but it makes little difference when working at a small Class B specialist dealership in Texas. I know the direction we need to move in and know what the company structure needs to be...but, it aint my decision or my money! My boss told me to run withthe service department....then tied my shoe laces together!

I'm white collar. I get politics. I don't know if you have the skills to sell (maybe one of your sales guys can help here) your boss on investing in Daimler certification, but you should at least talk to the guys at http://www.sprinterengineering-compliance.com and find out if your dealership is able to purchase training for Sprinter upfitting/service from Daimler Vans of North America, LLC. It's not cheap and honestly, it might not be economically reasonable or - in plain English - make good sense when payroll's due.

If your boss' business can pay some money to get training and tools, ability to offer certified service it's a big, big, big advantage in your area (the way I see it); your boss could run a big fish in a small pond with the right tools and specialized expertise. Your boss could take business from the local MB dealerships, esp if they're lacking in the service department, or are just 40 miles too far away.

There are independent shops in the European Union that are able to offer Mercedes-Benz authorized service.

That needs to happen in Canada and the US. It begins with a phone call - with research - from the front line operatives like you. If Daimler Vans of North America, LLC wants to be a real competitor, to not lose everything to Nissan, Ford and Fiat, they'd better start recruiting, aggressively, with deep discounts on training and tools for people selling the Sprinters in a clown suit (sorry, I really don't like RVs and I have an image to keep up here :smirk:).

I watched the video and tried it but did not work, tried multiple ways and never could get a beep.
Its a 2012 freightliner sprinter, "ATC Dallas freightliner Group" will no longer service it and was told to go the Mercedes dealer for service, and they are saying that they are the only ones that can reset it.... changed the oil myself. I know this is a old post but its the only one I see on resetting service indicator for 2012 and I cant be the only person with this problem.

Yes that's the one I used, I was not waiting for the mileage to come up the first time..
so today I did it again and it all worked until the last step, had it on 5.1 then pressed and the 2 came up, let off the button then pressed again and the done did not come up, I even tried it using the 3.1 and the done would not come up. Anyone in the Dallas fort worth area work on these besides the Mercedes dealer??

I have never done with an Autell MD802 diagnostic scanner but from what I have read it can be done. So I would think most scanners independent garages use could reset it and maybe even a loaner at a parts store.

I have done my '12 (w/o steering wheel buttons) using something like the above steps with success the last couple times I changed my oil. I cant remember the exact details (where the devil is in this case) but I was able to get it to work. I am due to change the oil again and I plan to do it sometime this week so I will pay more attention this time, write down and share the steps I used.

I documented the steps in the video, then after my oil/filters change performed this morning I followed them. Worked fine.

This is what I did (vehicle with no steering wheel buttons):

Turn ignition to 2 - wait for normal mileage display.
Press/hold O button until beep - up to 30 seconds - though around 8-10 seems common.
Repeat momentary press O button until rESEt and .51 are displayed.
Press/hold O button until 2 displayed - a few seconds.
Momentary press O button once - rESET donE displayed.
Ignition Off.

To check:

Start engine - wait for normal mileage display.
Repeat momentary press M button until wrench and 10000 are displayed. This indicated you are now set for the next 10000 mile interval until the next service.
