Replacing the front spring

The front spring on my '05 sprinter has a big crack right down the middle of it. My mechanic suggested I look for a Steel replacement from one of the local spring shops, as it would be MUCH cheaper. Has anyone else done this or tried to do this kind of a replacement????

Your mechanic is right it is much cheaper than an original part But its a false economy as they don't last as long as OE as they dont last as long I would recommen spending that little bit more for peace of mind.
