Chirp when the engine shuts down

I've notice a "chirp" sound when the engine shuts down. This occurs if the engine has only been idling as well as if its been run a while. No odd noises while running. I don't know what it could be but I'd like to head off any failures later down the road. Ideas?
Thanks,
Clint

Is this a belt chirp? Have you tried listening for the sound while someone shuts off the engine?

I have not had this happen. On the forum for my last truck Dodge with the Cummins turbo diesel some owners had this happen. They traced it to the engine rotation stopping faster than the belt driven items like alternator, ac compressor... The inertia in these items caused them to continue to rotate for an instant after the drive belt stopped and caused a chirp. This sounds like what you have. Cummins determined this was not an issue to worry about. Hope this puts your mind at ease.

Thank you all! Your description of the cause makes sense. It sounds like a belt slipping, like when the A/C compressor kicks in on an old car I used to own.
Thanks again.
