Oil Cooler bypassed

Altered Sprinter

Happy Little Vegemite
Yep its mapped down Bruny way:lol:

So it's flooded or on fire , and add a few cyclones.
Well that pretty well sums it up.
It's stuffed.

Hi Guys,

I think I've located the replacement oil cooler. Can anyone confirm that this is actually to right component, and if there is anything else required when replacing it.

http://www.gsfcarparts.com/154me0260

Note: The existing cooler does not have any external hoses attached to it, and it is simply mounted to the engine block. I'm guessing these need to be bought, and plumbed into the collant system?

Here are full details of my Sprinter:

Year: 2000
Model: 312D
Engine: 5cyl 2.9L Diesel
Body: LWB Van/Bus
VIN: WDB9034632P987975

Many Thanks

Another throught...

Does anyone here have a 312D sprinter, or know of one that they can take a photo of the Oil Cooler, and post it or email it to me? I just want to know exactly what I'm dealing with here in terms of ordering parts.

The link in my last post, is clearly not right. I did manage to find a supplier in Canberra, but I am assuming that there is more than just the wafer looking cooler housing. As I said I have no hoses attached to it, and from an assembly diagram I received from the supplier, there seems to be a lot of hardware that it fitted to it or in that region. a good pic would certainly help.

Does anyone have any experience in dealing with these? What temps can I expect to reduce to with this new cooler in place.

The twats at the local mercedes dealership said that they were not permitted to disclose specifics !

Thanks again

Thomas . Give VANWORKS 0883497446 a call, they are in Adelaide and can source most parts and specialise in Sprinters murray

Thomas.
That cooler is for a CDI motor. The 412d is a cast aly construction with the hose coming out of the edge not the front face. Eric

Thanks Norton, will try that tomorrow.

Yes Eric, figured it wasn't right... gave it a miss.

I saw a twin sprinter out on the road today eith what appeared to be a factory standard front bumper/grill... has a lot of air intake by what I saw... I went & put a few more air holes into the "moose bar" today and openned up some airflow through areas thst was rather restricted... went for a drive down the range and back up again, and managed to makntain the temp at 95C on the guage. This after it had been at idle for 45min in my driveway whilst I burped out some air in the coolant and managed to feed it another half litre of fluids!

Dont get me wrong, I still have good intentions of replacing the oil cooler (when I find one that's accesible without a 3 week wait from Germany), I think this alone was a vast improvement given the idle temp was 87C !

VANWORKS have been very helpful, and managed to source a cheaper oil cooler for me. They also have a 2nd hand one for $300. Does anyone consider 2nd hand ones as ok to use. They have guaranteed no corrosion, and 1mth warranty. Otherwise its $900+ and 2 weeks waiting from Germany.

So I've ordered the oil cooler.. should be here in a few days, or early next week. Meanwhile, I think I've managed to completely burp out any air-locks in the coolant over the past week... got nearly 1.2Lts in there. I know it's not loosing water, cos I've been checking the water level over past two days now since being certain it's all burped out and level wont drop even with it being driven. Having said that the temps seem to be more stable... the engine idles at about 87*C, and under general highway city driving sits comfortably on 91*C. Only when climbing the hills will it rise to 95*C/96*C, then drops to 91*C once going back down the other side. Everyone I speak to says that's normal for a lot of Euro imports especially Mercs.

This certainly appears a lot more stable than the 100*C+ temps I've been getting, especially given consideration to the fact the past 3 days have been 36*C+ daily temps!!

How much cooler can the oil cooler possibly make things? Given recent conditions I wouldn't expect too much.

May not make the coolant any cooler, but will make the oil run cooler and, since oil sprays cool the back side of the pistons, the pistons will run cooler - definitely a good thing.
