Default Change in Newest Post behaviour??

Within the last week or so, it would appear that clicking the "show newest post" link occasionally gets a "short tree" instead of the full thread.

(added): My view-thread option is (and has been) "hybrid".

Scenario: i start the day clicking "New Posts" on the blue bar.
For a typical thread, i then click the little "arrow" icon next to the newest poster's name.

For most threads, that brings up a page with the entire thread, with the screen pre-scrolled to the newest entry.
Good... that's the desired behavior.

But for some entries, i'm only being shown a sub-thread.
These appear to be ones where the post i'm viewing is a reply to a previous reply, not a reply to the original post.
The following screen-grab shows the issue... i'm only being shown the 3 (and it's typically only one). Note that the "post count" (upper right corner of each message) starts at 1, not 9 (or so) that's appropriate for this 12-entries thread.
This grab shows the thread tree, and (faintly) the URL which the "newest post" click provided.

Added: i note that in this example, some time elapsed between creating the "New Posts" search result, and my actual clicking of the arrow.. thus the two replies to bc339's post are added to the message window. If i have less of a lag, then all i'd see would be bc339's.

If this is a new "feature", i'm not appreciating it. If it's controllable (defeatable) at a user-preferences level, please describe how.

thanks
