Favorite places to camp

Howdy -

Let's start building up a list of favorite places to camp in Sprinters!

This could be a campground, state park or just about anything else but if it is your friends driveway you might want to think twice about posting it unless your friend welcomes lots of guests . . .

Try to include some links that will help communicate to everyone what made the location special!

Cedar Key(s), FL

Sunset Isle RV Park - http://www.cedarkeyrv.com/

Cedar Key (http://www.cedarkey.org/) was almost the capital of Florida when the state was first added to the US. It feels like it hasn't changed much since then! It's probably about what the more well known southern keys were like about 30 years ago.

Sunset Isle is small and very friendly - again, a lot like what campgrounds were like 30 years ago. You can get a site that puts you DIRECTLY on the water and you will be an easy bike ride to the city of Cedar Key.

Bahia Honda State Park, FL

I have yet to camp in my Sprinter Westfalia at Bahia Honda (http://www.floridastateparks.org/bahiahonda/default.cfm, http://www.bahiahondapark.com/) but I have visited a few times in previous VW Westfalias. It is worth noting that Sprinters may not fit under the bridge in order to access the sites on the west side of the key (but there are sites on the east that don't have that limitation).

This is simply a beautiful spot, with beaches that are regularly voted some of the best in the country. You will think you somehow drove your camper to a Carribean Island.

In the past you had to show up early and wait at the park entrance until near the end of the day in order to get a spot but it was worth it!

Walt Disney's Fort Wilderness Campground, Orlando, FL

This one is a bit different than the last two. This is not a beautiful, scenic location but instead a busy Disney experience. Still a great place to stay if for different reasons, though!

The Fort Wilderness Campground (http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wd...ildernessCampgroundResortLandingPage&count=29) at Disney World in Florida is a great deal when you take the following into account:

- you are in the park for the lowest price available
- you have access to the Disney transportation system within easy walking distance of your campsite
- pets are allowed

If you plan to stay at Disney World and have an RV (or even just a tent) this is a great option that will save you money.

Sunshine Skyway Fishing Pier, St. Petersburg, FL

Camp in your Sprinter, "at sea . . ."

I have not had a chance to try this as, when I did, I discovered that they did not allow pets. So I will allow my friend Rich Luhr, of http://www.airstreamlife.com/ to speak:

"The best camping is on the South Pier, so from St Pete you cross the
Sunshine Skyway bridge and then take the first exit right to the
fishing pier. They'll charge you a fee to stay, but don't call it
camping! You're "fishing." No services at all, except the cops will
swing by once or twice at night. Cooking outside is not allowed but
we did it discreetly."

Here's a pic of the GS, but this area is definetly Sprinter-friendly. I won't give away all my secrets, but it's IVO N38 32.5 W119 52.6

It's been many years, but I've camped there. Why not just tell everyone where it is? Hope this doesn't offend you, ObiWanJak: it's Lake Alpine up the hill from the Bear Valley ski area. If you're coming from the West, make sure to visit Murphys on the way.

We had nice lodging at Dorrington in January 2002 but haven't been to Lake Alpine in maybe 30 years.

Fort De Soto Park, St. Petersburg, FL

Good facilities in a wonderful location (keys at the mouth of Tampa Bay) make this a great place to stop.

Pets are welcome in one area of the campground and the park includes a fenced in area for them and a non-fenced in beach where you and your pet can swim and catch some rays together!

The North Beach within the park was listed as the best beach in the US for 2005.

Also, the Spanish American War history at Ft. DeSoto is worth an afternoon.

Here is my Westy in it's camping spot:

Great thread. I have been attempting to get people on the View/Navion site to share their favorite places.
I have posted under "Files" on the View/Navion site a review of the Oregon Coast. I am new to this forum so am not certain yet where I might post it here.
I also posted on the View/Navion site under "files" a primer on traveling to Mexico in your View/Navion and think much of the information would be valuable to others on this forum.

We recently completed a three month tour of Baja in our 06 View H. We used the Woods book on RVing in Baja and it is a great resource for places to stay. We especially enjoyed Estero Beach resort just south of Ensenada. Estero Beach Resort sits on on of the two major estuarys in Baja and is AMAZING for birding. They have a hot tub and pool available for RVers as well as a wonderful Sushi bar, a rare find in Baja.

The website Baja Nomads is a wonderful resource for current information and a lot of interesting dialogue about things Baja.

I went to the Files section in the Yahoo View/Navion group and couldn't find the above. You're welcome to post it in this category in a separate thread.

We highly recommend the lazy J campground in Rapid City, SD. If you must stay in Rapid city and don't want the expense of a hotel - this is a great campground - run by friendly people.

We just left Canyon Point on Arizona's Mogollon Rim between Showlow and Payson. We spent two relaxing days in our 07 View there. The campsites are HUGE and placed amid fairly dense pine forest.

Terra Port, Airstream Factory, Jackson Center, OH

This is probably of greatest interest for Airstream owners but even for others, this would be an interesting stop if a bit of a dull camping experience.

The Terra Port (http://www.airstream.com/) is free to anyone having their Airstream serviced but it is reasonably priced for all.

Pets are welcome (even indoors in the waiting room and store), full hookups and wifi are available, and the display of vintage/ historic Airstream trailers and factory tour are very interesting and informative.

Jackson Center is a charming little (with the emphasis on the "little") town in the midst of cornfields and soybean farming and there are a number of interesting day trips in the general area.

Info: http://www.airstream.com/ (Airstream is currently revising their website so the Terra Port info is not readily accessible - I expect this will change soon)

Here is my Westy in it's camping spot (next to it's BIG brother!):
