Rear door, opening -screened windows for Pass. model Sprinters
Message #22763

This may be of interest to owners of Passenger model Sprinters doing
their own camper conversion. Especially if your dinette is at the rear
and you need more fresh air. Our freinds at Peninsula Glass have right
and left rear door windows available with full height sliding
openings(half width) and screens. I'm not sure they actively advertise
these. You many recall my numerous previous posts regarding pass.
model window openings and the mods sometimes needed to install various
manufacturers opening screened awning style windows. Because of the
more extreme radii of the rear door window openings, the Peninsula
windows for this pass. Sprinter rear door application regretably have
flange fits(particularly corners) that are less secure(and visually
less appealing) than their side window models(which fit without
rework). I have overcome this problem using a simple mod. AND the
rubber weatherstriping from the removed factory windows. I recall
posts regarding "glued-in" rear door windows. I'm not sure this
applies to Pass. models. At least it didn't on mine.
Lay the old glass on top of the Peninsula window frame. Line up
the BOTTOM radius right and left. Leave about 8mm overlap of bottom
egde of flange. Scribe a sharp line direct into the black anodizing of
the new window around entire circumference. This will reveal gaps at
UPPER radius right and left. Mask off outer window area(to protect
from difficult chip clean-up). Cut on this scibe line using your band
saw with fine tooth blade. You have now re-created the original window
perimeter with 2 exceptions. Gaps at upper radius corners and the
thickness of flange is not full 4mm(the original glass thickness). You
remedy both issues by going to hardware store and purchasing 1X1/16
anodized aluminum bar stock. Cut this to match the cut flange widths
and lay original window on top again and recreate the full upper
radius(right and left). Glue(urethane or similar) to window flange on
back side and you now have a window which will accept the factory
rubber weatherstrip. Fits and looks GREAT! Andy
