Down and out in Mexico

Message #6417 of 33420
My sprinter with 5000 miles on her is so doggy that I can rarely
get her out of 4th gear and I am not towing. I am positive the turbo
is not boosting. Also the transmission will not down shift for
acceration purposes. She will run through the gears all the way
to "D" from a stop even if you keep the rpms at 1000 and no way will
she downshift pushing the pedal to the floor. Fortunatley I can
and do manually shift where I need to be. If the turbo worked I
might even consider towing the toyota back home I towed down. Oh
one more miniscule problem that occurred concomittantly (the only
reason I mention it) is that the alarm now sounds when I open either
the driver or passenger door when normally it does not. The key is
out and lights turned off etc. Go figure?
Great rig when it works. So here I am 1100miles south of the border
near La Paz without a stich of luck finding some help. If any of you
have any ideas or can forward this email to someone who may be able
to help I would really appreciate it. She is absolutely no fun to
drive now and a fuel guzzler too boot. I have put about 150 miles on
her since this happened and only because I wanted to get her here to
my casita.
I have written my dealer in Washington state and have my fingers
crossed. This is a potentially big problem for anyone considering
buying one of these or any vehicle so dependent upon electronics
when traveling in Mexico. I'll bet there is not a scope in Mexico to
trouble shoot this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Scott

I am curious as to how you made out with you mechanical problems (root cause and how resolved).

I am considering the purchase of a 2006 118" Sprinter for the primary purpose of touring Mexico and would appreciate any insights based on your experience as to whether this is a good or bad idea.

My understanding is the the Dodge / Chrysler warranty provides coverage in Mexico and I have seen Sprinters on a sales lot in Guadalajara but I suspect that they are only sold and serviced by Mercedes in Mexico and that taking it to a Dodge dealer for service would be futile since they would not have any service expertise or stock parts.

Thanks for any info you can share on your experience.

This is not my post, rather a copy from YahooSprinterVan. I believe it was later determined to be an EGR problem, which if he took Andy's advise he probably just cleaned.

On that forum there are a few more posts about traveling in Mexico. Use the Search.

On the View/Navion site I have posted under "Files" a primer on taking your View/Navion to Mexico. It may be relevant to members of this forum also.
