Good link however the Dodge Sprinter had the same issues on overloading and I believe Winnebago conversions [Don't Quote me on this as fact for the US variant]
There is an option for a heavy duty front stub axle and rear axle ratios I have no idea if the States were ever offered this option
Its a long story the link you posted covers this in brief but not fully as it was still under investigation when the post was listed , in part I can say its based on weight to power ratios.
In the secondary part without getting into conflict, No campers will be built on the 2007 Sprinter platform or the VW Crafter platform if the overall vehicle exceeds 4.9 Tonne. "Fiat which has a genuine truck chassis is the only one that now qualifies for RV conversions up to 7 Tonne."
It has a lot to do with Australian compliance with the DOT as to safety issues and the known fault with flex in the chassis design other problems are where the stove is situated gas bottles LP
The findings for ADR in Australia was they exceeded the GMV load ratings
