Have friends who live there and want to visit sometime. Any recommended car parks/laybys to park the van in overnight (where the fun police won't move me on)?

Nice pics................

btw really like the pic of the gate..................I have a thing about old doors and gates and took a number of pics of old gates/doors when we were in Europe last year......... OZ does'nt have the history nor the variety Europe and the UK has.

Wife suggested I do a coffee table book with my collection.

Truly a lovely town. What does it mean "market town"?

Truly a lovely town. What does it mean "market town"?

It means that this was a place where all the farmers came on one or usually two days a week to sell their produce, the 'market' would usually be in the centre of town, frequently the town square. There were many towns like this in Britain but since WWII they have slowly been changing into larger more urban towns or cities, or become dormitory towns to big cities, or in some cases just stopped the weekly markets altogether.

Bury St. Edmunds had a central market for all the farmers in West Suffolk county which dates back to the 9th century or earlier. Last year the whole area of the market was re-developed into a modern indoor shopping complex (Sometimes refered to as a shopping mall) in my opinion a huge amount of character has been lost although the town council retained a smaller market close by where stalls are still set up every Wed. and Sat.

It must be 30 years since I was in Bridgenorth and from those photos I don't think it has changed all that much which, for me, is one of it's attractions.
