If you look at the back you'll see a cover with some printing on it. Use a blunt object to pry the cover off. This is easiest on the key side, but it isn't easy.

I did Richard................I was refering to the head/brain of a dumb Taswegian being a remote place........not the remoteness of Tasmania.

Thanks for your comments especially David 42. I think I will wait till I get a flat (remote) battery prior to taking the challenge on.

PeterinSA, It's very easy to replace the batteries. If yours is a T1N, just look for the little words and an arrow on one edge of the unit and push it apart with both thumbs. It takes quite a bit of force.
I have a non-functioning keyless entry system currently, and I've taken the transmitter apart about a thousand times trying to debug things.
Richard: Since we're discussing exact terminology, I believe that the use of the word "transponder" is inappropriate here.:idunno:
A "transponder" replies to a radio-frequency interrogation from a base station with a reply code, implying a two-way conversation between the two units. Air traffic systems use this to identify specific aircraft.
Since it doesn't have such two-way capability, the key unit should be called a "transmitter".
So there. :smilewink:

Although it became obvious as to what he meant was the rarity of these in Australia either he bought second-hand or if new paid more than one would dare as key-less central locking system operation is factory fitted and hardly any one took them on 1600 AU for three doors was an absolute rip off. as per Mercedes optional extra quote in 2005
I thought he was heading to a after market one which all failed. as some owner's bought second hand under warranty and went back thinking they were MB fitted only to find they were not and permanently locked out as Mercedes would no fix them.
Many wanted to install after but five dealerships that I know of can not or will not fit them let alone supply the retro parts for fitting.
Nest idea though

The reason I'm so f#*%&ing anal about keyless entry is.... mine keeps failing. At least now, I know the names of some of the parts. :idunno:
@1600AU for keyless entry, I agree is a ripoff. But it sure is a nice feature to have. I HATE it when mine disappears.:cry::cry:

After our Cruiser was broken into 3m from our bedroom windows, left it out because had not removed the Broomstick aerial for the phone and the CB aerial on returning from a trip, had an alarm/central locking/immobiliser (with remote) fitted and Poly filled the door locks (except the rear). Did not get the same A/M unit that we had fitted to our buzz box (Corolla Seca Hatch) and I cannot isolate the system, its powered on all the time, ie either in Alarm mode or unlock mode, unlike the buzz box unit that I can turn off with a key.
We go deep bush over rough roads and occasionaly screws fall out. At the back of my mind, is what happens if a connector falls off, The installer did not give me the circuit for security reasons (or because he did not wire it in the standard method) and of course all wires are in black and I am not sure that it has a fail safe mode. I can easily cut the alarm wire. But the immobiliser.... take the dashboard off and...... 2000+Kms away from home
The trouble is that our cruiser has so much gear that I put into it, I don't want it pinched.
I don't want our Sprinter stolen, with this and that and this, that I have installed... but install an immobliser..... not likely
Technology who needs it.
