In looking for a clear cut explanation: Does MB put a special formula break in oil in the 3.0L diesel? 2 weeks ago I picked up a new 2010 RV on a 2008 Freightliner Sprinter Chassis. Freightliner says dump the oil to keep the warranty valid. What would you do to preserve your warranty with MBUSA?

The first and only thing I would do... is bring the van to a MBUSA dealer, speak the Sprinter service writer, explain the situation, ask the same question, have him contact MBUSA for the official answer & advice, then have them put the answer/advice in writing and/or perform the neccessary service.

Tell us what you find out and did, on Tuesday.

PS... Enjoy the weekend!

Freightliner is being careful on this one as to viscosity degradation .I'd replace the oil as to a precursor of entering the known possibility of failure at critical break-in periods.After-all it's a 3 year old oil .

Nearest Benz dealer is 175 miles away, Freightliner almost as far. I emailed MBUSA for an opinion. I'll probably have the oil changed closer to home after I get an answer from Benz. I'm thinking Valvoline Synpower 5W40. Freightliner said they follow 229.5 not .51 so I wonder if they know MB.

MB 229.51 is the only MB oil recommended for a NCV the dealer who states MB 229.5 needs to be immediately shot and disposed of as conventionality as possible, and disposed of at sea.
Mobil 5W-40 has the break-in oil added: Has Valvoline SynPower? If not you just voided your warranty.

Be aware, that most Mobil 1 does not MEET the V6 229.51 spec! The only Mobil 1 that does that I know of, is Mobil 1 ESP which is hard to find. There is a Shell oil that does, as well as a Valvoline. Any dealer that suggests using a 229.5 instead of 229.51 should be reported to MB!

Personally, for the 14 quarts of oil, plus a filter, I would change it. I am not sure if there is a "special" break in oil or not.

icrus is right I forgot the ESP..Note: Mobil meets the MB specification's for break-in oil in fact most full syn's do ,but not all .
It's true many N/A oil sellers state MB complaint I'd be wary on that one.

Valvoline SynPower MST 5W40 (Valvoline p/n 966) has all the same approvals as the Mobil ESP-M product.

It is not just "claiming to meet the spec". The oil is listed as approved on the MB Bevo website.

To say it is somehow missing some magical break in elixir that is in the Mobil product is pretty silly. The Mobil ESP-M oil is approved for ongoing use. Why would it need, or worse yet, why would you want the extra compounds that are typically in "break in" oil on an ongoing basis? Most break in oil compounds are not DPF friendly over the long term.

The key is MB229.51 approval. Mobil ESP-M and Valvoline SynPower MST both have it.

I'm not quite sure I follow you... can you be more specific? :D:

FYI...
I got my quarts all lined up and waiting for me next week at Warner Freightliner SLC, Utah :rad:

I think the reference is to Mobil 1 ESP formula as opposed to general Mobil 1.

I just got this from a Dodge/Sprinter dealer:

There is no indication from Chrysler/Mercedes in any service manual, owners manual or training manual that any "break-in" oil has ever been recommended on this vehicle. There is no indication in any service manual or owners manual that any other oil is recommended or required. Oil quality of this synthetic oil is very high. It is not needed for proper break-in.

After quizzing the nearest Freightliner dealer, who does not use Mobil 1 ESP but some other oil that is by his explanation 229.5 And after checking with the Dodge/Sprinter dealer who says that there is no such thing as 'break in oil' but uses Q Diesel Plus SAE 5W30. I think I have determined to have the 'aged' oil dumped in favor of the Valvoline Synpower probably at 2000 miles. Now to addressing the service warning at 400+ days overdue.:bash:

Bob what you have depicted is a reflection as to JD's postings.
Mercedes has and always has direct referencing to break in oils, always for ever and a day.
Your dealer has no knowledge nor does the dealership give a rats tail about you or your van let alone the RV converters who was in it for a quick buck, take your money and run.
MB 229.51 NCV there are no arguments and it must be suitable for a Turbo SCR DPF
32955
Oils there are specific PDF's documented for evaluation.

ONE FINAL SHOT: MBSPRINTERUSA called me today. 'Break in Oil' they say is the same as 1st change oil. No special formulas just 229.51. Also, they (MB) advise changing every 12 months or 10K which ever comes first. Several times I was told 'CHANGE IT NOW' Appt set for 10 AM tomorrow:cheers:

Getting your oil changed now is the right thing to do.

I would like to say that there is such a thing as break-in oil. MB USA dealerships probably can't order any from Europe, though.

http://sprinter-source.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5543

They are MB specifications: 225.10, 225.11, 225.12 and 225.14

One of those is/was the first factory fill in Germany. That the MB USA employees you spoke to don't know this is at best disappointing and at worst... oh forget it.

I hope you have a fantastic ownership experience!

Dan...that isn't the ESP that is approved for our Sprinters, its Delvac ESP. Look on the back, it is 228.31 not 229.51.

It's great oil.....just not for a NCV3. Too bad Mobil just can't call the Sprinter/Benz oil something completely different.

I think you're refering to Mobile 1 Delvac and not Formula M, I'm almost sure you can't get Formula M in Gal. containers.
