I thought this deserved its own thread.
Mean_n_green how often did u do an oil/oil filter change in that time. Every 10,15 or 20,000ks?
Did u have anything major done to the engine in that time.
What size engine,313?
Any other tips?
840,000 yummy
thanks
Martin

As a general rule I have cut all maintenance intervals to half the mfg's specifications. That is one place to start ....... although I am using WVO also ......

It gets even better, I'm fairly sure it's 840,000 Miles not Km. That's 1,352,000Km and he's stated it's the I5 2.7l motor. Amazing distance on original motor & gearbox, what about the diff ?

Martin Mean in green could have gone to one million miles on the original engine but the deal for a second hand one was too good to miss so he did the swap The van now resides in Ireland.
We have a documented 2003 Sprinter that's clocked 1K in Australia now retired by the owner for his personal use as a Camper.
Cheers Richard

It's an OM612. More about it here Martin:

Actually I unintentionally misrepresented the distance: I drove it ~840,000 in total but when I think about it... to be correct the engine was swapped a little before that - apology for the inaccuracy.
As far as maintainence went: Assyst was an option in 2000. I put my faith in it and let it tell me when I should change the oil. Typical interval was 30,000, I just serviced it when it said it wanted it. Of course I had my share of repair bills, I think the manifold split once, and I had a few Sprintshift pumps, four clutches I think, probably as many turbos. These are all bolt on bits though - the block and head never came apart.
Driving tips: allowed it a brief moment to build pressure before moving off in the morning. Allowed it a couple of minutes to cool down before turning it off when I got back home. It worked hard for its keep for nine years and a bit years, sometimes very hard.
I only swapped the engine because what looked like a good cheap used unit came up unexpectedly. The original unit was running fine but I knew there could be issues developing: three of the glow plugs had given up the ghost: no chance I was risking getting those out... The mechanical refresh helped the van's resale value quite well and I subsequently sold it soon afterwards.
I always smile when I think of that van. Wow, some of the places I went in it. Nearly every european country in ten years, I think Malta and Andorra were the only ones we "missed". I don't do that sort of mileage any more. The last job I did in it was in the soon to be Olympic Stadium London. It seemed quite the noble end for us: I climbed up to the top of the concrete precast and looked back down on it, sat in what will probably become the centre spot for a football club some years from now. It's a very special vehicle.
You wanna know the irony? A man with more than a million miles under his belt actually simultaneously went nowhere in some senses. Everything changes right? I was single back then (in my "T1Ncan" days!). Am happily married now with a fantastic wife. We had our first baby just over a year ago - home is where it's at these days. I feel as though I've done another million in the last year alone.
