Hi All
Just want to say that this is a great site and so far it has helped me out heaps ,
I am a newbie here and i have just purchased a 1999 312d sprinter and the head gasket has blown on it ,
At this stage i have the head ready to come off but i am wondering if there are any timing marks that i have to line up on the timing chain to cam ??? or on the bottom crank ??
Also how do you remove the timing chain guide from the head so it can be removed ???
I have worked on many cars before but never a diesel or a Mercedes
Thanking everyone in advance for the help ,
Cheers from Downunder , Rick

Rick.
I have a 312 but have not had the head of yet. There are manuals on this site, Max in the UK has a list on one of his posts. Where in Melbourne are you? if you are south east I could come and give you a hand. Eric.

Hey thanks Eric.
I am Seaford near Frankston
Got the head nearly off but i am stuck on getting the timing chain and drive cog off due to chain guide having a pin going through the front of the head ,
Pin has a Thread in it so i am thinking that you put a bolt and nut on to unlock it maybe ???

Ok good news have removed the pin which hold the chainguide , it is a insert that just slides out use the inner thread with lots of washers and spacers to pull it out with a bolt using the inside thread , ,
now i am up to the stage where the head can come off but i cannot find any timing marks on crank to locate tdc ,
also cannot find anymarks on the cam sprocket ,,
looks like i have to pull the inspection cover for the injector pump and mark them ,
I just hope that it is not like a datsun 1600 or 180b and when you release the hydraulic tensioner that the chain slips of f the bottom crank cog , ,
touch wood here we go

Talking to a fellow sprinter owner, he had problems when he replaced the head with his Hydraukic Lifters, put the engine back together and no compression, valves were not seated properly, instead of adjusting the lifters (apparently its not that easy)that had done some Kms bought a new set of lifters for $400 or $500. I am not upto date with lifter jargon or adjustments, and the discussion was some time ago. Any comments to add, to help the above Sprinter owner with his head fix/gasket change,
Peter

well i have got the head off and all looked good until i undid the last bolt under the bolt on cam journel ,
discovered why head was leaking from the back as it had a broken head bolt ,
this is going to be fun trying to drill out the old bolt and see if i can get an ezyout in there ,
i know there is no tension on the bolt but the head has been leaking and i am hoping it is not rusted in there ,
let u know how i go ,
Cheers for all of the advice that has been given so far
